The Putting Track Drill

Smooth Out Extreme Paths for a Straighter, True Stroke

Sticks 2 Config Together Focus Putting

Drill Objective

Eliminate excessive looping and cut strokes on the green. While a great putting stroke naturally has a slight arc, extreme "out-to-in" or "in-to-out" paths cause pushed and pulled putts. This drill uses the pathpal to lay down a precise visual track, training your putter head to stay online through impact and release directly toward the hole.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Assemble your pathpal unit so that it holds two alignment sticks parallel to each other.
  2. Find a relatively straight, flat putt on the practice green.
  3. Place the pathpal on the green, aligning the two parallel sticks so they point directly down the target line toward the hole.
  4. Position your golf ball in the center of the two sticks, ensuring there is just enough clearance for your putter head to fit between them.

Run The Drill

  1. Take your normal putting posture, squaring your putter face to the target line between the two alignment sticks.
  2. Take a smooth backstroke, allowing for a slight, natural inside arc without letting the putter head wander outside or yank sharply inside.
  3. Initiate the forward stroke, focusing entirely on letting the putter head swing straight through the channel and down the track toward the target.
  4. Concentrate on the split second just after contact—make sure the putter face stays online and releases toward the hole rather than pulling left or pushing right.
