Train Tracks Drill for Putting and Chipping

Consistent chipping with improved club path

Sticks 2 Config Together Focus Short game

Drill Objective

This versatile drill is a staple in professional instruction for a reason, directly addressing fundamental issues in both putting and chipping.

Precision Putting: Ensure your putter travels perfectly on line for consistent start lines and true rolls.

Consistent Chipping: Learn the critical feeling of taking the club straight back and straight through the "tracks" – avoiding going inside too early and promoting solid contact.

Improved Club Path: Develop the muscle memory for an efficient and repeatable stroke for both short game shots.

Visual & Tactile Feedback: See how pathpal Golf and Alignment Sticks combine to create an unmistakable guide for your swing and stroke.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Connect the two halves of your pathpal.
  2. Place the full block on the ground so the long edge points perpendicular towards your target.
  3. Place two alignment sticks flat on the ground through the Lengthwise Tunnels. Choose distances that you feel comfortable with
  4. Place your golf ball between the alignment sticks

Run The Drill

  1. Take your stance as you normally would
  2. Work your backswing such that your clubhead stays between the train tracks back and through
  3. If putting, same idea, work your backstroke and forward stroke so the putter stays between the alignment sticks

Here's another way we can use the pathpal.

The Setup — Train Tracks

We're just creating a couple of train tracks here — two parallel rods with the ball in between. Simple setup, immediate structure.

For Putting

This is a great idea for putting. You can get on the green and just keep your putter between the tracks. Good awareness. Pretty simple structure — but it works.

For Chipping

I also think this is a great idea for chipping. It gives you the feel of that club staying straight back and straight down between the sticks.

What I typically see with members is they take the club inside right away. You could also add another rod here — perpendicular — so you can feel that inside move being blocked. But even just this simple drill — feeling like the club travels back and down between those tracks — is a great way to work on chipping.

Simple drill. Great feedback. It works for both.
