Master Your Putting Stroke for Centered Contact

Config Split Focus Putting

Drill Objective

This drill utilizes the Path Pal to create a "gate" for your putter, ensuring a consistent and centered strike, much like how top professionals practice

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Split the pathpal and place the flat edges together towards each other
  2. Ensure the gap between the halves such that it is just wide enough for the putter head to pass through
  3. Confirm your eyes are positioned directly over the golf ball or slightly inside when you address the putt

Run The Drill

  1. Place a golf ball in front of the pathpal gate
  2. As you make your putting stroke, concentrate on passing the putter head cleanly through the center of the gate

Hi everyone, my name is Cody Carter, Director of Player Development at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

Full Swing and Short Game

I've got the pathpal here — we use it a lot for the full swing, but we also use it for the short game. For putting, I've set it up as a putter gate drill.

Why This Drill Works

You may have seen Tiger Woods use this drill with tees, but the pathpal is a great way to set it up — sturdy, repeatable, and easy to adjust. We're going to set the gate just wide enough for the putter to pass through cleanly.

If you're missing putts on the toe or the heel, this drill will help you find centered strike contact.

Setup Keys

Before you start hitting putts, make sure your eyes are over the ball — or slightly inside the ball — at address. That eye position is critical to giving your stroke the correct spatial reference for the gate.

The Drill

Set both pathpal units just outside the heel and toe of your putter at address

Make your stroke and pass the putter through without touching either side

If you catch a rod, you know exactly where your miss is

Keep hitting putts until you're consistently clearing the gate

That centered contact is what leads to a purer roll, better distance control, and more putts made.
