Anti-Early Extension Drill

Train Your Body to Avoid Early Extending your Lead Leg in Your Golf Swing

Sticks 1 Config Together Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

This drill uses the pathpal with an alignment rod and a pool noodle to provide a physical barrier, helping you maintain your posture and avoid early extension, which can lead to "over the top" swings and a loss of power

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Take the pathpal and insert an alignment rod into it at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Place the pool noodle on the alignment rod to serve as a soft target.
  3. Position the pathpal and noodle so that they are in the path of your hips during your downswing, forcing you to maintain posture to avoid hitting them.

Run The Drill

  1. Take your normal golf stance
  2. Make a practice swing, focusing on avoiding contact with the pool noodle
  3. If you hit the noodle, it indicates that you are extending your trail leg too early and coming "over the top"
  4. Continue practicing the swing motion until you can consistently avoid the noodle, which will help you learn to stay "in the shot" and improve your power and consistency

The Tool

I just recently acquired the pathpal and I think it's one of the coolest training aids for 2025. Lots of angle options, a lot of versatility for different drills.

The Setup

Here's a drill I want to show you for early extension.

I've set the pathpal to face toward the golf ball, with the alignment rod in the 90-degree hole. I like to put a pool noodle on it — gives players a little more feel and makes the contact softer.

Stand with the feet at the edge of the pathpal. From there, just take some practice swings.

The Cue

The goal is simple: don't hit that alignment rod on the way down.

If you hit it, your trail leg extended early and you pushed out of your posture. Chances are you're going to get a little more over the top from there — and lose a lot of power.

Do that three or four times — then hit a shot.
