The Vertical Face Squareness Drill

Get Real-Time Feedback on Your Clubface at Impact

Sticks 2 Config Split Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

Most golfers struggle to know exactly where their clubface is pointing at the moment of truth. This drill transforms the pathpal into a precision feedback tool. By setting an alignment stick vertically, you create a physical "checkpoint" through the impact zone that tells you instantly if your face is open, closed, or perfectly square.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Set up your pathpal training aid in its standard position.
  2. Insert an alignment stick vertically into the pathpal so it stands upright on the target side of the ball.
  3. Position the vertical stick so that it aligns with the center of your ideal swing path through the impact zone.

Run The Drill

  1. Take a controlled swing, focusing on your hand and club shaft reference on the way back.
  2. On the way through, aim to have your clubhead make contact with the vertical stick.
  3. Analyze the feedback: Hit the right side of the stick: Your clubface is open at impact. Hit the left side of the stick: Your clubface is closed at impact. Hit the stick dead center: Your clubface is square.
  4. Adjust your grip or release until you can consistently strike the stick dead center.

Two Jobs in One Setup

Not only can you use it as a hand reference and a club shaft reference on the way back — you can set it vertically on the way through.

And that vertical rod becomes your truth detector at impact.

The Three Outcomes

Hit it right → face is open

Hit it left → face is closed

Hit the stick → face is square
