The TrueStrike Ribcage Connection Drill

Connect Your Arms and Rib Cage for Maximum Control

Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

This exercise uses the TrueStrike by pathpal Golf to solve the problem of "arm separation." By securing the foam block between your elbows, you force your arms to sync with your rib cage rotation. This eliminates a "handsy" swing and creates a wide, powerful arc that moves as one cohesive unit.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Place the TrueStrike foam block around your neck using the adjustable string.
  2. Slide the plastic stop to secure it comfortably at chest height.
  3. Position the block directly between your elbows.
  4. Squeeze your elbows lightly together to hold the block in place.

Run The Drill

  1. Start with small, controlled swings—this is a feel drill, not a distance contest.
  2. Focus on rotating your rib cage back and through while keeping the block pinned between your elbows.
  3. If your arms separate from your body (the "Home Run Derby" move), the block will fall or feel unstable.
  4. Aim to hit shots only about 60 yards, focusing entirely on the "positive feeling" of staying connected.
  5. Practice until the rotation of your torso and the movement of your arms feel like a single, unified motion.

The Setup

I've got my handy foam block — this is the TrueStrike by pathpal. A lot of my students call this the airplane pillow.

We're going to stick this around our neck using the lanyard. I've added a little plastic stop so it hangs at the right position. And then we're going to plant it right between our elbows.

We're not going to look like a St. Bernard on a mountain — but what we're going to do is use this to find connection with the rib cage.

Why This Matters

Anyone who knows a little about the golf swing knows that rib cage rotation is very important. And it's easily forgotten.

When the arms and rib cage separate, the club moves around freely — and we don't want that. What happens when you're an arms-and-hands separator? [demonstrates] That right there — home run derby. Not what we're after.

The Drill

Plant the TrueStrike between your elbows. Rotate. Notice what's happening — there are not a lot of arms and hands. Why? Because the block keeps them connected to the body rotation.

This is not a distance contest. We're not trying to hit this 200 yards. Maybe 60.

[Hits shots] — Stay connected. Just like that.

[Hits again] — There we go. Stay connected.

The Feeling

The golf swing is all about creating feelings — and we want positive feelings. The positive feeling here is the arms staying connected to the rib cage rotation as the club moves.

That's the drill. Stay connected.
