The Knee Stabilizer Putting Drill | TrueStrike

Quiet Your Lower Body for More Consistent Putting

Focus Putting

Drill Objective

Excessive lower body movement is a common "putt-killer" that prevents the putter face from returning squarely to the ball. This drill uses the TrueStrike as a stabilization tool between the knees to create a rock-solid foundation, allowing your upper body to rock the putter consistently every time.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Take the TrueStrike
  2. Step into your putting stance.
  3. Place the TrueStrike directly between your knees.

Run The Drill

  1. Squeeze the TrueStrike lightly with your knees to engage your lower body and create stability.
  2. Focus on keeping your "nose and knees" perfectly still throughout the stroke.
  3. Make several practice strokes, feeling your upper body and shoulders doing the work while the TrueStrike keeps your base quiet.
  4. Once you feel stable, begin hitting short to mid-range putts while maintaining the unit between your knees.

Hi, my name is Janean Murphy — LPGA and PGA Teaching Professional and 2024 LPGA Global Teacher of the Year.

The Problem I Noticed

I had a young student who was putting, and when he putted I noticed his lower body moved — a lot. And his upper body moved with it.

When that happens, the putter face cannot return to the ball the same way it was at address. The arc shifts, the face changes, and putts miss — sometimes left, sometimes right, inconsistently.

The Fix

I took the TrueStrike and placed it between his knees.

Immediately, his lower body became more still. The physical presence of the block gave him something to stabilize against — something to feel — without having to think about it consciously.

The Cue

We focused on two things: nose and knees.

Keep your nose still. Keep your knees still. When both are anchored, the putter can return to the same place every time — because the center of the arc hasn't moved.

Try It

Next time you're on the putting green, try the TrueStrike between your knees. See if your lower body quiets down and your putter face becomes more consistent. It's a simple change — and it works.
