The Left Ear Drill

Stop Pulling Your Approach Shots and Keep Your Head Behind the Ball

Sticks 1 Config Together Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

Designed by LPGA Global Teacher of the Year Janine Murphy, this drill utilizes the pathpal to eliminate upper body sway and stop pulled approach shots. By positioning the training aid near your lead ear, it creates a crucial visual reference point that forces you to keep your head and sternum behind the ball through impact and into your follow-through

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Set up your normal stance for an approach shot.
  2. Position the pathpal training aid so that it aligns directly off your left ear (for a right-handed golfer).
  3. Ensure the training aid is close enough to serve as a clear visual boundary for your head position without interfering with your physical swing.

Run The Drill

  1. Take your setup and focus on the visual boundary created by the pathpal off your left ear.
  2. Initiate your downswing, focusing on keeping your head and sternum firmly behind that visual reference point.
  3. Swing through impact and into your follow-through without letting your upper body slide forward past the pathpal.
  4. If you feel or see your upper body cross that line, reset and focus on maintaining your center. Repeat until you consistently stay behind the ball.

Today I had a player come in who was pulling his approach shots. So we worked on keeping his head behind the ball at impact.

He was letting his upper body slide a little too far out in front of the ball — a very common fault. Here's how I used the pathpal to fix it:

  • Setup: I placed the pathpal off his left ear — right at the edge of his peripheral vision.
  • The visual cue: As he swung through, the pathpal rod gave him a clear reference point for where his head and sternum needed to stay in relationship to the ball at impact and into the follow-through.
  • The result: He could immediately see and feel when his upper body was drifting forward — and correct it in real time.

So next time you're pulling the ball, give pathpal a try.
