The Kneecap Setup Drill

Find Your Perfect Athletic Stance for Every Club

Sticks 1 Config Together Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

One of the most common questions in golf is how to set up correctly to the ball. This drill provides a foolproof "checkpoint" to ensure you are in an athletic position every time. By using the "kneecap touch" method, you can automatically adjust your posture to match the length of any club, from a wedge to a long iron.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Choose a club (start with a wedge or a 7-iron to feel the difference).
  2. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the club in front of you.
  3. Prepare to hinge from your hips to find your stance.

Run The Drill

  1. Hinge forward from your hips and slightly flex your knees until you can touch the top of your kneecaps with your fingertips.
  2. From this position, let your arms hang and grip the club.
  3. Notice how your posture changes: with a wedge, you will feel a bit "flatter" and closer to the ball; with a 7-iron, you will stand slightly taller.
  4. Verify that the club shaft feels perpendicular to your spine angle.
  5. Once aligned, take your swing.

One of the questions I get a lot is: how do I set up to the golf ball?

The Kneecap Touch

There's a really easy way to find your athletic stance. Simply hinge forward from your hips until you can touch the top of your kneecaps with your fingertips.

That's it. That kneecap touch gives you your athletic base — the hip hinge, the spine tilt, the knee flex. All in one simple check.

Club-Specific Posture

Now, notice the difference between a wedge and a seven iron — those are different.

With a wedge, you're going to be a little flatter, a bit more tilted, on that lower pathpal line. With a seven iron, you stand up a little bit taller.

But the principle is the same for both: the shaft is perpendicular to your spine. That's the feeling you're after when you set up to each club.

The Drill

Touch the tops of your kneecaps. Align your spine perpendicular to the pathpal stick for the club you're hitting. Swing.

Pretty simple.
