The One-Footed Balance Drill

Master Your Posture and Ground Interaction

Focus Full Swing

Drill Objective

This drill uses the TrueStrike block to challenge your stability and spatial awareness. By temporarily taking away your standard balance, you train your body to move correctly through the three planes of motion—sagittal, frontal, and transverse—preventing postural "swaying" and improving ground interaction.

Practice Plan

Set it up. Run the drill. Know what to feel.

Use the steps below to build the same station every time, then make focused reps with clear feedback.

Set Up

  1. Place the tourTrueStrike block on the ground at your hitting station behind you.
  2. Select an 8-iron and set up with a golf ball.

Run The Drill

  1. Trail Foot Setup: Place the toe of your trail foot (rear foot) softly on the block.
  2. Controlled Swing: Take a swing and attempt to hit the ball approximately 80 to 100 yards, focusing on maintaining your tilt and balance throughout.
  3. Lead Foot Setup: Move the block to your lead side and place your lead toe on it.
  4. Identify Instability: Repeat the swing. You may notice one side is more difficult to balance than the other; continue practicing on both sides to even out your stability.
  5. The Final Test: Remove the block and hit a ball from your normal stance. You will feel more grounded and move much more efficiently.

Hey, Brian Jacobs here in Rochester, New York at Brian Jacobs Coaching. We're indoors today and we're using the pathpal — specifically the TrueStrike block that comes with your pathpal kit.

What Is Proprioception?

I want to talk to you about something called proprioception. Proprioception is essentially your body's perception of how it moves through space — including through a golf swing.

A golfer moves in three planes:

Sagittal — up and down

Frontal — side to side

Transverse — tilted and rotational

All of these actions have to happen simultaneously. When people have postural problems — moving up during the backswing and then crashing severely down — it's often because they lack a stable connection to the ground.

The Drill

A great way to address this is to deliberately take their balance away. Here's how:

Take an 8-iron and plan to hit the ball about 80–100 yards

Place your trail foot toe softly on the TrueStrike block

Take your swing and focus on maintaining your tilt while staying balanced

You can also lift the trail foot off the block during the swing if needed

Lead Side Version

You can do this on the lead side as well — place the block under your lead toe and repeat the same motion. You'll likely find one side is more stable than the other, and that's completely normal. Just keep working on both.

The Goal

Stay soft on the toe. Stay balanced. Swing through and hit it. You may fall slightly one way or feel perfectly stable — both outcomes give you useful information about where your balance and ground interaction need work.

The Payoff

Once you feel comfortable, take the block away and hit a ball normally — with your full base. You'll notice your balance is better and you move through the swing more efficiently. If you need any more help, reach out at brianjacobscoaching.com.
